Ingredients

STEP ONE

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (preferably olive oil)

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • Salt & Pepper

STEP TWO

STEP THREE

Directions

STEP ONE

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees

  2. Cook the ground beef by warming the oil in a skillet and adding the meat with a dash of salt and pepper.

  3. While beef is cooking, break it up into pieces.

  4. While cooking, prep the ingredients in step two.

  5. When the beef is fully cooked, scoop it into a bowl with a slotted spoon. Keep about 1 tbsp of the fat in the pan for the next step.

  6. Keep warm during step two.

STEP TWO

  1. While the meat is frying, chop the onion, bell peppers, and garlic cloves.

  2. Add the onion and garlic in the same skillet where you saved the 1 tablespoon of oil from the meat. Cook over medium heat until the onions are translucent.

  3. Add the peppers and season the mixture with salt and pepper as preferred. Coof for about 5 minutes.

  4. Add ketchup to the mixture, stirring occasionally until you have a thick paste, which usually takes about 5 minutes.

  5. Add chili powder and mustard and stir till well mixed in.

  6. Add tomato sauce, broth, vinegar, Worcestershire, and brown sugar. Cook, stirring until well combined.

  7. Add the beef back to the pan and a dash of hot sauce if preferred.

STEP THREE

  1. In a baking dish, transfer the meat mixture.

  2. Top with cheese.

  3. Add the buns (tops and bottom for a total of 16) to the top of the meat mixture.

  4. Brush the buns with melted butter.

  5. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the rolls are slightly toasted and the cheese is melted.

Tips-n-Tricks

  • Looking for a time-saving method for this recipe? Grab a premade packet of Sloppy Joe Seasoning and prepare the meat according to the instructions.

  • If you do not have dried mustard, you can use regular mustard, too. Just add a bit at a time, taste, and add more if needed.

  • Looking for a healthier version? Use ground turkey, olive oil instead of the meat's fat, and four buns sliced more thinly to reduce the amount of bread consumed in each serving.
